Are you feeling overwhelmed with Laundry, Dishes, and Floors? Well I am here to tell you, you are not alone. As you probably know I have two small children, but I am going to let you in on a little secret. I struggled with these 3 chores and more before I had kids. It wasn’t until this year 2020, go figure, that I figured something out on how to manage these chores. I am still working on the others and when I get that figure out I’ll update you. This post is the second chapter of how I tackled these 3 chores on a daily basis.

Chapter 2

Dishes

Welcome back for chapter 2 of chores that should not be mentioned!

Dishes! Yes again. I know, I know, I said it! Maybe if we say it 3 times they will do themselves! Heres to wishing!

Dishes! Dishes! Dishes!

Did yours get done? No? Neither did mine.

Ok lets get to it. Pinterest and social media have all these ideas of how the perfect kitchen should look at the end of the night. Dishes should be washed and put away and the kitchen look as though it had never been used.

Lets be real, “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”

Does this perfect kitchen feel good, Yes! But like laundry, I struggled with this task even before kids. I think I hate dishes and wiping the stove/counters more than I hate laundry!

I love my life and I love to cook too. For 6 years of my marriage we did not have a dishwasher and my husband hates dishes more than I do. He has only done the dishes maybe a 1/2 dozen times or so for almost 10 years. All I can say is praise God we remolded our kitchen right before our first child was born and we added a dishwasher!

I have taken the idea of the perfect daily cleaned kitchen and adapted it to fit my laziness. Every night I cook dinner and even the nights I do not cook, I do the dishes, because lets face it there is always dishes to be done. There are days that this does not happen, its life. I am not perfect and sometimes I just don’t want to do it.

This is all pretty self explanatory but if your anything like me I like to know how others do things around the house. It keeps me motivated and if I don’t like the way I do it I will try another method and see how it goes.

So lets have a chat about the different ways to do dishes. I have read books and posts and watched youtube videos on how to “Correctly” do the dishes. I have read and watched as they rearrange the dishes in their sink so that everything that is alike will be washed together and you should load your dishwasher in a manner that makes it easier to unload. For myself I have use the one touch rule. I touch it one time from sink to dishwasher or drying mat. As far as loading my dishwasher, basically I play a game of Tetris and constantly ask the question of where will it fit?! I find the one touch method to work the best but if you find away to get those dishes washed 5 out of 7 days in a week I think you are winning. So you do you boo!

I start at the top of the pile in the sink and either rinse and place in the dishwasher or hand wash it. I know that a sink full of dishes will roughly take 30 minutes start to finish. I start the dishwasher and unless its only one dish or so I do not dry and put away the hand washed dishes unless I have the energy. Most of the time I wipe down the counters and scrub the sink, if not every night, it is every couple of days or so. And on those nights that I put my kitchen back together I will light a candle to help counteract any strong food smells.

The next morning is when I will put away the hand washed dishes. If I feel as though I have the time I will unload the dishwasher. In a perfect world I will unload the dishwasher and then load the dirty dishes through out the day making it easier after dinner. But lets be honest, I am not perfect and am kinda lazy so majority of the time it waits till end of day.

Dishes can be daunting and most of us just need to get them washed. But I will tell you this, when I wake up the next morning and I don’t have a sink full of dirty, harder to wash, crusty dishes staring me in the face, I do believe I enjoy my first cup of coffee just a little bit more.

If your still with me lets do a quick recap.

  • Wash/load and run the dishwasher every night.
  • How you accomplish this task is all up to you, it just needs to get done.
  • Use your sponge to wash your sink and empty the drain catch when finished with the dishes.
  • Unload the dishwasher and put away the hand washed dishes sometime during the day.
  • Either load as you go through the day or all at once at the end of the day. Either way you will be happy you did.

Unfortunately there isn’t really a magic wand to flick and have your dishes done, but there is a dishwasher. And if you don’t have one, I am very sorry I have been in your shoes but just know the more you keep up with them the less daunting it is. Just remember that at the end of the day I am standing at my sink doing my dishes just like you!

Products I use to do the dishes. I use a sponge and Dawn hand renewal dish soap. I put the soap in this touch-less dispenser I purchased at Bed Bath and Beyond https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/simplehuman-reg-compact-sensor-pump-soap-dispenser-with-sample-soap/1041325377?keyword=touchless-soap-dispenser

I use this drying mat https://www.amazon.com/Norpro-12-Inch-Microfiber-Dish-Drying/dp/B079KW9QSL/ref=sxin_9_ac_d_rm?ac_md=3-3-Z3JleSBkaXNoIGRyeWluZyBtYXQ%3D-ac_d_rm&crid=1S21211BT4Q8B&cv_ct_cx=dish+drying+mat&dchild=1&keywords=dish+drying+mat&pd_rd_i=B079KW9QSL&pd_rd_r=bebfd93f-671a-4d45-9302-fa353b516339&pd_rd_w=Vwkza&pd_rd_wg=IJ02e&pf_rd_p=3d1a8341-be16-45b1-ae3d-ba8c533ec9f0&pf_rd_r=14YDQ7AT9AGQ2BNCDPY0&psc=1&qid=1600369240&sprefix=dish+%2Caps%2C223&sr=1-4-12d4272d-8adb-4121-8624-135149aa9081

And for the dishwasher I use Finish Powerball PODs and Finish Jet Dry Rinse Aid. The Finish products are recommended by my dishwashers manufacturer.

Hi! My name is Ashley and I am a wife of almost 10 years and a mom of Irish twins Daisy (3) and Brady (2). I grew up in a small town and after college moved back to marry my Husband, Corey. I am not perfect at anything I do and will be the first to tell you I struggle with balancing life on the daily. Cooking and Baking are were I feel like I shine, but I enjoy learning and trying all the things.
